Your Mazda RX-8's engine has a timing belt that controls the rotation of the camshafts and crankshaft in the internal combustion engine. The timing cover helps protect the timing belt from any road debris. The timing cover gasket is the working seal between the timing cover and the engine block, in which it helps the timing gears receive lubrication from the engine oil. Signs of a failing or broken timing cover gasket will be engine oil leaks.
